PNP CHIEF MARBIL WARNS COPS WORKING AS BODYGUARDS FOR PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Rommel Francisco Marbil has issued a directive reminding officers to focus on public safety and not provide services to private individuals.

Marbil made the remark following the arrest and filing of administrative cases against two Special Action Force (SAF) cops who were found to be working as bodyguards for a Chinese citizen living inside an exclusive residential village in Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

“Our duty is to ensure the safety of our citizens. Police must be available at all times to address the needs and concerns of the public,” Marbil said in a statement.

“By prohibiting moonlighting, we are reinforcing our commitment to quick and efficient response to any situation,” he added.

The two SAF police officers, who were supposedly deployed in Zamboanga City, were arrested in May after they got into a heated argument that led to blows, with one of them sustaining wounds on his forehead.

They both admitted they were working as personal bodyguards of a Chinese man residing in a subdivision in the Ayala Alabang area.

According to PNP regulations, only the Police Security Protection Group is permitted to provide security to authorized individuals.

Furthermore, Marbil also announced an intensified campaign of PNP against cybercrimes. He said more resources will be allocated and capabilities of the police force will be enhanced to fight the increasing threat of cyber-related offenses.

He also called on the public to report any police abuse and reach out to PNP through the following hotlines: PNP Hotline: 117 or 911; Anti-Cybercrime Group: (02) 414-1560; Internal Affairs Service: (02) 723-0401 to 20.

“Your safety is our priority, and your feedback is essential in helping us improve our services. Together, we can build a safer and more secure community,” the PNP chief said. —Giselle Ombay/RF, GMA Integrated News
