BAGUIO MIDLAND COURIER TO CEASE PUBLICATION AFTER 77 YEARS

The Baguio Midland Courier on Sunday announced that it will cease its operation in July after 77 years of covering weekly news in Northern Luzon.

In a notice posted on Facebook, the Courier said the community newspaper was “not spared from the worldwide trend that newspapers are facing unprecedented challenges.”

“The decision to cease publication was a difficult one, and the management deeply regrets any impact this may have on our esteemed readers, newsboys, supporters, contributors, and advertisers,” read the notice signed by Antoinette Hamada, the paper’s publisher and chief operations officer.

The Baguio Midland Courier has three issues left to be published on July 7, 14, and 21.

The paper said it is looking into preserving its archive for future reference.

“While the print edition of the Baguio Midland Courier will no longer be in circulation, we encourage you to stay connected with us through any means possible, as we are hopeful that new opportunities will arise, allowing us to continue our mission in different forms,” the newspaper said.

The Baguio Midland Courier was founded by Sinai Hamada. Its four-page maiden issue was released on April 28, 1947 with a circulation of 200 copies.

In 2017, the Baguio Midland Courier became a member of the Philippine Press Institute Hall of Fame.

The community newspaper also received five Best Edited Weekly Newspaper awards, seven Best Editorial Page awards, and Best in Science and Environment Reporting awards from the national association of newspapers.  —Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News
