FIBA WORLD CUP UNDER PNP SECURITY BLANKET

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has security preparations in the drawing board for the country’s hosting of the FIBA World Cup in August.

PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. said yesterday they will apply the same security strategy implemented in previous international events such as the 2015 Asia Pacific Economic Conference (APEC) Summit, the Papal Visit of Pope Francis in 2015 and the 2017 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in 2017.

Acorda expressed confidence in the PNP’s capability in providing a safe and a secure environment for the participants, officials and spectators of the tournament to be held from Aug. 25 to Sept. 10.

“The PNP is fully committed to the success of this prestigious international event. We are working closely with our partner agencies to deliver a memorable experience for everyone involved,” Acorda said in a statement

The PNP has organized Security Task Force (STF) FBWC 2023 as the primary body responsible for conducting security operations and other public safety services during the basketball event.

Representatives from the FIBA World Cup’s local organizing committee, Philippine Sports Commission, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, local government units, other concerned agencies and stakeholders are part of the security task force.

With up to 3,253 FIBA World Cup customer groups participating, Acorda said ensuring a secure environment is their goal for the event,

The PNP’s chief publicist, Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan, stressed the importance of collaboration and vigilance during the tournament.

“We encourage the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to ensure a safe and enjoyable event for all,” he said.
