'SERIOUS' CRASH CLOSES MAJOR ROAD INTO CITY CENTRE

Part of a major road in Newcastle has been closed following a "serious" crash.

The B1318 Great North Road in Jesmond was shut in both directions on Thursday morning, affecting traffic travelling near the city centre.

Northumbria Police confirmed officers were at the scene.

The road is expected to be closed from the Blue House Roundabout to the A167M Central Motorway until mid-morning, the force said.

The crash has been described as "serious" by the AA's traffic monitoring service.

It warned drivers of delays in the area and said congestion was building to Grandstand Road and Jesmond Dene Road.

Traffic has also been affected through Gosforth High Street.
