PARENTS OF STABBED TEEN INSTALL EMERGENCY BLEED KIT
The parents of a teenage girl who was stabbed to death have installed an emergency bleed kit close to where she died.
Holly Newton, 15, was found with stab wounds in Hexham, Northumberland in January last year and died in hospital.
Her mother and step-father, Micala and Lee Trussler, have installed the box at Hexham Abbey in the hope it will be used to treat anyone who suffers a major injury.
"We can't ever have Holly back so it's good to try and help somebody else, try to stop somebody else from losing their child," Mrs Trussler said.
The couple also plan to put up boxes "throughout the Tyne Valley".
Holly, from Haltwhistle, had been walking home from school with a friend on 27 January when she was stabbed in Priestpopple, Hexham.
The charity Hollys Hope was set up in her name, and aims to raise funds to buy and install bleed boxes and critical injury kits around the north-east of England.
Mrs Trussler said: "I just woke up one morning and thought we need to make something good happen out of something tragic."
A bleed box contains dressings, a tourniquet and scissors.
Mrs Trussler said the project had given her family "something to focus on".
"Before anything had happened to Holly, we had never even thought about these [bleed boxes].
"I like to think she'd be proud of us, proud of how we've handled everything and then got these into place," she said.
Mr Trussler said setting up their first bleed kit was a "bitter-sweet moment".
"We should never need them, but now that it's up, it's here just in case it's needed."
He said the kits were "not cheap at all", costing £520 each.
Mr Trussler added: "We've got more fundraising to do to get more kits throughout the Tyne Valley.
"Our hopes and goals are to have at least one in every town, village and city throughout the North East."
A teenager accused of stabbing Holly Newton to death will face a murder trial later this month.
