MAN SENTENCED FOR STABBING DEATH OF NEIGHBOUR
A man has been given an indefinite hospital order after admitted to the manslaughter of his neighbour, who was found stabbed at a supported living complex.
Mohammed Ashraful Choudhury, 26, was found with serious injuries at a flat in Biscot Road, Luton, on 11 January 2023. He died later in hospital.
Cameron Leckey, 33, of Biscot Road, pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder but admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, at Luton Crown Court, in January.
Mr Choudhury's family, said: "Not a day goes past where we don’t think about him and remain hurt by the events."
Bedfordshire Police said it was called to the flats to reports that a man had been stabbed.
The force said Leckey, who lived next door to Mr Choudhury, was being supported for long-standing mental health issues, having previously been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
He was captured on CCTV approaching his neighbour carrying a large knife before stabbing him in the chest, it said.
'Tragic incident'
Leckey was ordered to be detained in a secure mental health hospital under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act and received a Section 41 restriction order, which means he is deemed a risk to the public if released.
Mr Choudhury's family said: "There’s an empty space in our family, and a crack in our hearts which will never be filled.
"Not a day goes past where we don’t think about him and remain hurt by the events, but it’s a price we’ll continue to pay for the cost of loving him."
Det Sgt Clare Matier said it was "a tragic incident" and the force's thoughts were with Mr Choudhury's relatives.
"This hospital order with restrictions will enable Leckey to receive the appropriate treatment while also ensuring he does not pose a threat to others in the future."
