FUNERALS HALTED DURING CREMATORIUM REFURBISHMENT

Funerals will be suspended for two weeks at a crematorium while it is being refurbished.

Work on Distington Hall Crematorium, near Workington in Cumbria, starts on Friday and is due to end on Sunday, 14 April.

It is due to reopen for funerals at 12:00 BST the following day.

Work to be carried out includes refurbishment of the foyer, chapel and cloisters.

There will also be a new family room, and the toilets and music system will be updated too.

The cemeteries and the Chapel of Remembrance at the site, managed by Cumberland Council, will remain open.

Carlisle Crematorium is fully open and can be used as an alternative during the temporary closure, the council said.

Councillor Anne Quilter, who is responsible for crematoria and cemeteries at the council, said some work had already been carried out at the crematorium.

"This has included re-wiring in the crematory areas and lighting work in the cloisters, which will limit the time that the crematorium will be out of use," she said.
