CORDON LIFTED AFTER ARMY EXPLODES ORDNANCE

An unexploded ordnance found on an East Sussex building site has been detonated

Homes and businesses within 100m (328ft) of the Ashdown House site in Sedelcombe Road North, Hastings, were evacuated at around 09:30 BST on Thursday.

Sussex Police confirmed at around 14:30 BST that the Army had safely detonated the ordnance at the scene.

A spokesman for the force said: "The cordon has now been removed and residents can return to the area."

Ashdown House was used as offices by the Department of Work and Pensions.

It was demolished last year and the site is undergoing development for housing.

The Ministry of Defence has been contacted for comment.
