'TORIES MUST NOT DELAY ON MARTYN'S LAW WHILE THREAT OF TERROR ATTACKS RUNS HIGH'

Don’t delay on security

There have been 14 terror attacks in the UK since the horror of the Manchester Arena bombing in 2017.

Despite the assiduous work of the police and security services, it is sadly a question of when, not if, the next tragic incident will take place. While we cannot eliminate the threat, we can do more to minimise the risk.

Which is why it is so important that Martyn’s Law, named after Arena attack victim Martyn Hett, is enacted by Parliament. The law will require premises to put in place measures like improved security and staff training, which will better protect the public.

Rishi Sunak first promised to bring in Martyn’s Law by the spring of 2023. There is now a fear the legislation will not be passed before the general election.

We understand that ministers want to get this right – but there can be no further delay. The longer they take to act, the greater the risk that more innocent lives could be lost.

Let ’em dry up

It is not just the sewage discharged by Thames Water which stinks, the finances of the company also reek to high heaven. Bosses of the privatised firm loaded it with debt and used much of the proceeds to pay shareholders billions of pounds in dividends.

Money which should have been spent on cleaning up our polluted waters was siphoned off into the pockets of investors. Thames Water is now demanding that bills rise by 40% to stop it going bust.

Households should not be on the hook because of the greedy actions of management. Nor should they have to pick up the tab for the costly failure of Tory privatisation. If the company cannot meet its debts, it should be allowed to go bust – and then be brought back under public ownership.

Bitter pils

Fans going to Euro 2024 are warned about the strength of German lager. They may be best to follow the England team and stick to the shots.
