JAY SLATER SEARCH STEPS UP AS TENERIFE POLICE PLAN 'MASSIVE' OPERATION IN 'STEEP ROCKY AREA'

Tenerife police have called on volunteers to join a massive new search operation for Jay Slater they plan to launch this weekend.

The Tenerife Civil Guard has launched a call for action for volunteers to join the hunt across the local countryside in a statement today, as the operation passes its 11th day. Tenerife Civil Guard police chief Angel Sanz Coronado said the "mass search" will begin early on Saturday morning.

He said: "Following the disappearance on June 17 of the young 19-year-old British man in the area of Masca, belonging to the municipality of Buenavista del Norte, the Civil Guard is prepared to carry out a mass search. Given that it is a steep, rocky area, full of uneven terrain and with many ravines, tracks and trails, we request the collaboration of all those Volunteer Associations that can help in this planned search that is intended to be carried out in a directed and co-ordinated way."

"This massive search will begin on Saturday 29 June at 9am. A meeting point will be established at the Mirador de la Cruz de Hilda in Masca to start the search in a logical and orderly way along the many paths and ravines that are found in Masca."

The force added in its statement that any volunteers planning to join the search should contact the civil guard via telephone before 8pm this evening. A spokesperson said: "Volunteers must contact the Civil Guard by telephone (0034) 696434031, before 8pm on Friday 28 June."

While the police are hoping to enlist more people to aid in the search effort, it said is not searching for amateurs who don't have the prerequisite experience. The spokesman clarified that it was not asking the "unexperienced" general public to join the search, only experts in the type of terrain in the area as well as professional volunteers like firefighters and Civil Protection workers.

Jay was reported missing on June 17 after leaving a rave festival alongside two British men the previous weekend, with whom he stayed in an Airbnb before reportedly attempting to travel home. Local police launched a search the same day, with national authorities and volunteers joining in the days following, and Jay's mother, father and brother have now landed on the Spanish island.
