ROMUALDEZ WANTS PROBE INTO ILLEGAL POGOS, UNMASKING OF MASTERMINDS

MANILA, Philippines — House of Representatives Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez has directed concerned committees to thoroughly investigate rogue Philippine offshore gaming operators (Pogos), the criminal activities surrounding it and to identify those behind it.

Romualdez on Friday said that his directive was in response to alarming reports of illegitimate Pogos being involved in crimes like human trafficking, money laundering, prostitution, rape, and even murder.

This, the Speaker said, underscores the government’s commitment to curbing illegal Pogos, and ensuring that regulations are implemented.

“We cannot allow these rogue POGO operators to persist in their illicit actions,” Romualdez said in a statement.

“It is imperative that we identify and unmask the masterminds and protectors behind these operations so they can be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” he added.

According to Romualdez, establishing the identity of people behind the Pogos would be important in seeking accountability.

“Establishing the identities of those responsible for protecting and facilitating these illegal operations and ensuring they are held accountable is a priority,” he said.

“Ensuring the protection of local communities and individuals affected by the illegal activities of rogue POGO operators is crucial,” he added.

Romualdez last Wednesday, in an interview with Teleradyo, said that he has no problem with allowing legally-operating Pogos in the country, noting that the crackdown should be on the illegal ones.

The Speaker also warned that a total ban on Pogos might only lead to businesses moving underground, which means the government can neither monitor these companies nor demand taxes from them.
