NHCP LEADS 22ND PH-SPANISH FRIENDSHIP DAY CELEBRATION

The national historical commission of the philippines (nhcp) led the nation in celebrating the 22nd philippine-spanish friendship day and commemorating the 126th anniversary of the start of the siege in baler, aurora, on july 1.

An earlier commemoration and equally significant remembrance was done at the tecson house in san vicente, san miguel, bulacan, on june 26 to honor the role simon tecson played in securing a victory for the filipinos in baler.

For the second part of the program, the invocation was led by the diocesan shrine and parish of st. Michael archangel, with messages given by san miguel municipal mayor roderick tiongson, bulacan gov. Daniel fernando, nhcp chairman lisa guerrero-nakpil and ambassador miguel utray delgado of the embassy of spain.

Tecson was put in charge by president emilio aguinaldo to lead the siege. Along with other soldiers from bulacan, tecson helped end the siege, received the surrender of spanish soldiers and made sure the prisoners of war were able to leave unharmed.

The siege of baler told the story of spanish soldiers that held out in baler church, 15 days after the proclamation of philippine independence. Despite informing them that the war had already ended, the soldiers barricaded themselves for 11 long months.

In 2003, republic act 9187 created philippine-spanish friendship day, which was to be observed on june 30 every year. This reminded citizens that the simple act of benevolence by the filipinos in baler paved the way for better relations between the philippines and spain today.
