DMMMSU, HOLCIM PH OFFER TRAINING ON FISH PROCESSING, VALUE ADDITION

THE Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) College of Fisheries is helping boost the fishery industry by offering a skills training program focused on fish processing and value addition.

DMMMSU Strategic Communications director Maricon Viduya said a recent training program was conducted in partnership with Holcim Philippines which "sought to uplift the capabilities of individuals engaged in the local fisheries industry."

Viduya said the DMMMSU and Holcim Philippines partnership demonstrates a shared commitment to empowering and enhancing the livelihoods of fisherfolk associations within the towns of Bacnotan and Balaoan in La Union province.

"The intensive one-day training session delved into various aspects of fish processing and value-addition techniques," she said, adding that expert instructors from the College of Fisheries led participants in hands-on practical sessions.

Viduya said the participants learned about food safety standards, bangus deboning, dried fish processing, smoked fish processing, and basic packaging and labeling.

Elaborating the purpose of training, DMMMSU College of Fisheries Dean Faith Tadeo welcomed participants with inspiring remarks while Fisheries Research and Training Institute director Andie John Tadeo emphasized the opportunity for participants "to familiarize themselves with the facilities and equipment of the college for potential future collaborations."

During the training, DMMMSU South La Union Campus Extension Office head Ronald Bustos and Holcim Philippines corporate social responsibility and administrative manager Matthew Joseph Almojuelo expressed support for the university's skills training program for fisherfolks.

Almojuelo emphasized Holcim's continued commitment to community development and support for locally-made products.
