WIFE OF DETAINED FOREIGNER NABBED FOR ALLEGED EXTORTION

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Anti-Organized and Transnational Crime Division arrested the wife of a detained Cameroon national after allegedly extorting money from a relative of another detainee in exchange for the latter's release.

According to a "24 Oras" report by John Consulta on Wednesday, the suspect was caught after receiving a bag with P1 million marked money in an entrapment operation in Parañaque.

Based on the report, the detained Cameroon national allegedly offered freedom to his fellow detainee in exchange for P8 million. The transaction was then carried out by their wives.

At inincrease na niya ito from P8 million to P12 million,” said NBI lawyer Jerome Bomediano.

(He said he had a group of hackers outside [the facility] and that they had access to the BI email. Our victim gave P870,000. Because they couldn’t complete P8 million, they started to threaten the subject by saying they could make the case worse and that he would be detained longer if the payment wasn’t completed right away. Then he increased it from P8 million to P12 million)

The fee was eventually lowered to P1 million.

(What’s unbelievable is that he’s still able to communicate outside and is able to order people. He also has access to online messenger. He’s inside the jail but still able to do crime)

Meanwhile, the BI is working with the NBI to investigate the incident.

“Nakikipagcoordinate tayo sa NBI para malaman ang detalye ng krimeng ito, as well as kung may ibang cohorts, maaaring maharap sa kasong extortion,” said BI spokesperson Dana Sandoval.
