NGCP: LUZON, VISAYAS TO BE PLACED ON YELLOW ALERT ON WEDNESDAY

The Luzon and Visayas grids will be placed under a yellow alert status on Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

The yellow alert status will start at 1 p.m. and will last until 11 p.m. in Luzon and 10 p.m. in Visayas.

A yellow alert status means that energy reserves are thin in affected areas.

According to a report in GMA Integrated News Bulletin, 18 power plants are currently on forced outages while three others are running below normal capacity in Luzon. In Visayas, 13 power plants are on forced outages while five others are operating below normal capacity.

The Luzon and Visayas grids were also placed on red and yellow alert on Tuesday.

NGCP said a red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.

The Department of Energy said it is closely monitoring and coordinating, through Electric Power Industry Management Bureau (EPIMB), with the NGCP and all generation companies on the current power supply condition.

Meanwhile, the Malampaya offshore field said it was able to deliver more than its export capacity amid the red and yellow alert warnings in Luzon and Visayas grids.

Prime Energy Resources Development B.V. (Prime Energy), operator of Service Contract (SC) No.  38 which governs the Malampaya project, said gas supply to customers peaked at 290 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD). The total is against the current maximum capacity of Malampaya wells at 262 MMSCFD.

“We are committed to continue providing dependable domestic gas supply especially in grid alert scenarios that could affect millions of Filipinos in Luzon,” said Donnabel Kuizon Cruz, Managing Director and General Manager of Prime Energy.
