NANCY BINAY MULLS RUNNING FOR MAKATI MAYOR IN 2025

Senator Nancy Binay on Thursday said she is considering a run for Makati City mayor in the 2025 national and local elections, and addressed the possibility that she might go up against her brother-in-law if she does so.

"At the moment...'yung future plans, ang trajectory niya talagang papunta sa Makati. Siguro ngayon, baka 70-30 kasi siyempre nga palapit na nang palapit," Binay, a graduating senator, said in an interview with reporters.

With Makati Representative Luis Campos—who is married to Binay's younger sister, incumbent Makati City Mayor Abby Binay—possibly running for the same post, the senator said she is eyeing to have an opportunity to sit down and discuss the family's political plans for 2025.

"Sa pronouncements niya, mukhang nagbitaw na siya ng salita na mukhang tatakbo siya ng mayor. Para sa akin, dapat always open 'yung pinto para mag-usap kami kasi at the end of the day, 'di ba, magpapamilya kami," she said.

"In his pronouncements, it seems that he has made remarks that make it seem he might run for mayor. For me, the door must always be open for us to discuss things because at the end of the day, we are family.)

"Lalong-lalo na ako ang panganay, ako ang ate, dapat 'yung effort na magkaayos-ayos na walang-laban dun sa pamilya ay yun pa rin ang goal natin sa 2025 elections...pamilya pa rin siya kahit asawa lang siya ng kapatid ko," she added.

(Especially as I am the eldest, I am the big sister, the effort towards ensuring that there is no family quarrel and that is still our goal for the 2025 elections...he is still family even though he is just my sister's husband.)

Currently, Binay said there are no efforts for both sides to discuss.

Regardless of their ties, Binay said the main consideration is to continue the legacy of her father Jejomar Binay, who served as Makati City mayor for several terms before becoming the country's vice president.

"At the end of the day, legacy ng ama ko ang kailangan naming i-continue. Kung anong serbisyong Binay na naumpisahan ng akin ama, 'yun ang kailangan na mapagpapatuloy. Kailangan ma-resolve sino sa aming dalawa 'yung mas makakapagpatuloy nu'ng ganong klaseng serbisyo," she said.

(At the end of the day, it's my father's legacy that we have to continue. Whatever service our father started, that must continue. We have to resolve who among the two of us will be better able to continue that kind of service.)

"Pag talagang sinabi ko na tatakbo ako, na-input na 'yon na malungkot man, pero at the end of the day, kailangan what will be good for Makati ang consideration. Kung kailangan na i-sacrifice yung in-law relationship para dun sa mga kababayan ko sa Makati, we have to sacrifice that," she added.

(When I actually say that I will be running, it will mean that it has been inputted that as sad as it may be, at the end of the day, what's good for Makati has to be the consideration. If the in-law relationship has to be sacrificed for my compatriots in Makati, we have to sacrifice that.)

Binay added that Campos could also look into the option of running for a position in Taguig City as the district that he is currently representing in Congress is now considered under the jurisdiction of Makati City's neighboring city.

For her, it would be hard for their supporters to choose between two candidates that basically came from the same family.

Nevertheless, the senator said she is not losing hope that their family will come up with a mutual decision on who will run for mayor in the upcoming polls.

"Away pamilya pa din 'yun kaya sa akin, ayoko mawalan ng pag-asa na hindi mangyayari na magkakaroon ulit ng ganun gulo sa pamilya," she said.

This is not the first time that will happen in the Binay family. To recall, two of Binay's younger siblings, Abby and Junjun, faced off against each other for in the 2019 mayoral race. Abby won. — BM, GMA Integrated News
