MARCOS TO LGUS: BRACE FOR LA NIñA

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday urged local government units (LGUs) to prepare for La Niña as the country continues to experience extreme weather.

In his speech during the distribution of assistance for farmers, fisherfolk and families affected by El Niño in Zamboanga City, Marcos urged local governments to be prepared at all times.

"It is extreme heat now and then in the coming months there will be extreme rains," the President said.

"I call upon the local government of Zamboanga and nearby communities in the region: be ready at all times. We should know the needs of our constituents and make programs that are sure to help our countrymen," he added.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) earlier said that La Niña, which is associated with above-normal rainfall, might begin between June and August.

The President assured the public that the government would provide aid amid the extreme weather patterns.

Marcos was accompanied by Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., and Local Government Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr.

"We are all coordinating to ease your burden amid the El Niño phenomenon," the President said.

Marcos extended P60 million to the city of Zamboanga and the provinces of Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga Sibugay.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development gave P10,000 each to 10,000 farmers and fisherfolk.

The Office of First Lady Marie Louise Araneta-Marcos brought the "Lab For All" Caravan to facilitate the families' medical and health needs.

The Office of House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez handed over 5 kilos of rice to all the attendees.
