MARCOS TO DOE: ADDRESS POWER WOES

MANILA, Philippines: President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday ordered the Department of Energy (DoE) to "closely monitor and coordinate with all stakeholders to address the situation" after the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) declared red and yellow alerts in the Luzon grid.

In a statement posted on his social media, the President said he has also directed all government offices "to set the standard in conserving energy and minimizing power consumption."

"At this time, it is crucial that we all work together to ensure a stable power supply for the next couple of days," he said.

"Let's adopt energy-efficient practices and stand together to overcome this challenge," the President added.

The NGCP issued red and yellow alerts for Luzon and the Visayas on Tuesday due to the forced outages from several power plants.

In its advisory, the NGCP said that the Luzon Grid will be on red alert from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and will be on yellow alert from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m.to 6:00 p.m., and 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

The NGCP said the Visayas would be on yellow alert from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

A red alert is issued when the power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand while a yellow alert is when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid's contingency requirement.
