MARCOS: SAMAR HAS COME A LONG WAY IN FIGHT VS. INSURGENCY

President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Thursday said Samar province has come a long way when it comes to fighting insurgency.

Marcos made the remark during the distribution of presidential assistance to farmers, fisherfolk and their families in a program at the Northwest Samar State University (NWSSU) in Calbayog City.

Without identifying them, Marcos said at least five municipalities in the province have already reached a stable internal security status.

''Isa ito (insurgency) sa mga balakid sa pag-unlad ng inyong lalawigan. Gayon pa man, malayo na po ang narating natin, limang municipality ang deklarado na na may stable internal peace and security status,'' Marcos said in his speech.

(Insurgency is among the hindrances to the province's development. Despite that, we have come a long way as at least five municipalities have already declared stable internal peace and security status.)

Marcos said a total of 186 community support programs have been enforced by the government in the province. He added that 63 former rebels were also assisted after they had surrendered to the government.

Last year, Marcos expressed confidence that communist rebel groups would be dismantled in Northern Samar. The President had challenged the 803rd Infantry Battalion bring rebels back into the fold of the law.

Meanwhile, the President extended monetary support amounting to P10,000 each to ten beneficiaries from the Provinces of Samar, Eastern Samar and Northern Samar; P50 million to the Provincial Government of Samar; P19.3 million to the Provincial Government of Eastern Samar; and P25.9 million to the Provincial Government of Northern Samar. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
