MARCOS, DSWD LEAD AYUDA PAYOUT TO EL NIñO-HIT FARMERS, FISHERS IN SULU

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian on Friday led the distribution of ayuda or financial assistance to qualified farmers and fisherfolks affected by the El Niño phenomenon in Sulu.

Each beneficiary was given P10,000.

Marcos also gave P10 million in financial aid to the Provincial Government of Sulu.

“Ikinalulugod ko na makasama kayo ngayong araw mula sa mga magsasaka na hindi alintana ang matinding sikat ng araw para sa masaganang ani, hanggang sa mga mangingisda na nakikipagsapalaran sa ating mga karagatan para maganda ang huli,” Marcos told the beneficiaries during an aid giving activity in the Patikul town.

(I am pleased to be with you today, from the farmers who brave the scorching heat for a bountiful harvest, to the fishermen who venture into our oceans for a good catch.)

“Narito kami ngayon upang ihatid ang tulong ng pamahalaan, umagapay sa inyong pagbangon mula sa mga pagsubok na dala ng El Nino, at upang mapakinggan ang inyong mga suliranin,” the President added.

(We are here today to deliver government assistance, support you in your recovery from the effects of El Nino, and listen to your problems.)

At the same event, the government also distributed P10,000 worth of cash aid to over 5,000 beneficiaries under the  Ayuda para sa Kapos ang Kita Program (AKAP) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

AKAP is a social protection program of the DSWD that provides cash aid to individuals who may not have access to regular forms of assistance because they do not belong to the poorest population.

The El Niño phenomenon is characterized by the abnormal warming of sea surface temperature in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean and below-normal rainfall.

Earlier, the DSWD reported more than 6 million individuals were adversely impacted by the phenomenon. —Sundy Locus/NB, GMA Integrated News
