GUNMAN IN KILLING OF BROADCASTER JUAN JUMALON NABBED IN DIPOLOG —TASK FORCE

Law enforcement authorities on Monday morning arrested the suspected gunman in the killing of broadcaster Juan "DJ Johnny Walker" Jumalon in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte.

In a statement, the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) said the alleged gunman, Jolieto Dumaog Mangumpit alias ‘Ricky,’ was arrested at dawn by combined elements of Misamis Occidental and Zamboanga del Norte police.

Mangumpit has a standing arrest warrant for murder issued by Judge Michael Lotao Ajoc of Misamis Occidental Regional trial Court (RTC) Branch 36.

"This case is as good as completely solved," said PTFoMS executive director Usec. Paul  Gutierrez.

According to Misamis Occidental Provincial Police Office director Police Colonel Dwight Monato, Mangumpit also has eight outstanding warrants of arrest for murder, frustrated murder, direct assault, and violation of the anti-drug law, and is also listed on the province's most wanted criminals.

Jumalon, 57, was shot dead in November last year while he was doing a live broadcast for his radio program on 94.7 Calamba Gold FM at his residence in Calamba, Misamis Occidental.

The suspect went to Jumalon’s residence, pretending to have an important announcement aired on the radio station, but suddenly drew his firearm and shot the radio anchor, hitting the lower lip towards the back portion of the head.

The victim was rushed to the Calamba District Hospital by his family but was pronounced dead on arrival by the duty physician.

PTFoMS in March said it has arrested two of the three suspects in Jumalon's killing in Misamis Occidental. They were identified as cousins Boboy Sagaray Bongcawel and Renante Saja Bongcawel.

"We are optimistic that given the weight of evidence against them, they would be convicted by the court," Gutierrez said following Mangumpit's arrest. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
