ASF SPREADS IN BACOLOD

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — African swine fever (ASF) has been detected in another barangay in this city.

The Bureau of Animal Industry confirmed yesterday that a swine death recorded in Barangay Tangub on Wednesday was due to ASF.

Twelve other pigs died of still unknown causes while 23 others were culled to prevent the spread of the swine disease.

The first two ASF cases in this city were detected in Barangay Taculing on Friday last week.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod is requesting the city veterinary office to conduct intensified testing and monitoring of live hogs as a precautionary measure.

As of May 30, Negros Occidental had logged 7,229 swine deaths, mostly due to hog cholera, with losses estimated at P93.1 million.

Mayors Jilson Tubillara of San Enrique and Nicholas Yulo of Bago City said the municipal governments would provide financial assistance to affected hog raisers.

At least 1,178 hogs or 5.58 percent of Bago’s total swine population of 20,836 had died.

Vice Gov. Jeffrey Ferrer said the Sangguniang Panlalawigan would amend its ASF ordinance to ensure that those caught transporting live hogs and pork products to the province will be meted stiffer penalties.
