6 PERSONS FACE COMPLAINTS OVER WATTAH WATTAH MESS —MAYOR ZAMORA

Complaints were filed against six people after they allegedly caused inconvenience to passers-by during the celebration of Wattah Wattah Festival, San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora said on Monday.

“Noong araw mismo ng kapistahan ay anim po ang kinasuhan at isa diyan involved nga supposedly naghagis ng muriatic acid. On the spot, anim po ang na-apprehend, nakasuhan,” Zamora told Dobol B TV in an interview.

(On the day of the festival, six people were charged and one of them allegedly threw muriatic acid. On the spot, six were apprehended and charged.

San Juan City held the annual Wattah Wattah Festival on Monday, June 24, in honor of patron saint John the Baptist. The traditional water dousing is part of the day-long festivities.

However some residents went overboard and doused water on unwilling passers-by.

According to Zamora, he personally accompanied one of the victims in filing a complaint before the Prosecutor’s Office. The complaints are for unjust vexation, malicious mischief and slander.

Some victims decided not to proceed with their complaints after an amicable settlement.

“Meron ding ibang cases regarding damage to properties sa mga sasakyan 'yung mga sumampa ng sasakyan, ngunit nagkaroon naman sila ng amicable settlement kaya hindi na po tinuloy,” Zamora said.

(There are also other cases regarding damage to properties after some residents clambered on top of vehicles. But they had an amicable settlement so the vehicle owners did not pursue filing complaints.)

To address the reported harassment and inconvenience, Zamora said the city government will make some adjustments for the celebration of the festival.

A city ordinance prohibits individuals from forcibly opening vehicles to drench passengers. They are also not allowed to clamber on top of or shake vehicles. Zamora said they will address some loopholes in the measure.

The San Juan City government would also designate areas where water can be sprayed.

According to Zamora, he will discuss with concerned officials the possibility of holding binyagang bayan or mass baptism during Wattah Wattah. —KG, GMA Integrated News
