GILAS PILIPINAS JOINS FIGHT VS DENGUE

SHORTLY after the Department of Health (DoH) announced a surge in dengue cases, Gilas Pilipinas, the national men's basketball team, and Baygon forged a partnership to help educate the public on dengue prevention during the peak mosquito season.

This collaboration will launch the "Pull Up Your Socks" education and awareness campaign, featuring Gilas players urging the public to adopt dengue prevention measures, such as pulling up socks to protect the legs, emptying standing water, spraying high-risk areas with mosquito sprays, and using personal repellents.

"Partnerships like this are important for the team as it gives us an opportunity to give back to the community in a meaningful way beyond the [hard] court," Al Panlilio, president of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, said.

DoH announced a notable rise in dengue cases nationwide on July 1.

Data from the DoH indicated a 10-percent increase in dengue cases, with numbers rising from 5,547 between May 5 and 18, 2024, to 6,082 cases from May 19 to June 1.

Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa called on local governments to intensify dengue monitoring and response efforts using the "4S" strategy, such as eliminating stagnant water, using insect repellent and protective clothing, seeking early medical consultation, and supporting fogging in outbreak areas.

The "Pull Up Your Socks" campaign will also include social media content led by influencers and Baygon ambassadors, encouraging Filipinos to share the importance of dengue prevention using the hashtag #PullUpYourSocks.
